What is Copyright?

Copyright is a right given by the law to creators of literary, dramatics, musical and artistic works and producers of cinematograph films and sound recordings. In fact, it is a bundle of rights of reproduction, communication to the public, adaptation and translation of the work. There could be slight variations in the composition of the rights depending on the work.

In terms of section 51 (a) of the Copyright Act,1957,when any person without a license granted by the owner of the copyright under the Act or in contravention of the conditions of a license so granted or any of the conditions imposed by a competent authority under the Act, does anything , the exclusive right to do which is by at Act conferred upon the owner of the copyright shall be considered that the copyright shall be entitled to civil and / or criminal remedy conferred by law for the infringement of a right.

Cable TV Copyrights

As per provision of rule 6 (3) of the Cable Television Networks Rules,1994,no cable operator shall carry or include in his cable service any programme in respect of which copyright subsists under the {Copyright Act,1957(4 of 1957)}unless he has been granted a license by owners of copyright under that Act in respect of such programme.

CAUTION! – Infringement of copyright attracts heavy penalty which can extend upto a fine of
Rs.2, 00,000/- (Rupees Two Lac only) and imprisonment of 3 (three) years.
